Mumbai to Launch India’s First Electric Water Taxi with Sweden’s Support

Government-Backed Initiative to Ease Traffic and Promote Sustainability

Mumbai: In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable urban mobility, Mumbai is set to introduce India’s first electric water taxi service with the support of Swedish company Candela. This pilot project aims to revolutionize water transport by offering an eco-friendly and efficient alternative to road travel.

The announcement followed a meeting between Maharashtra’s Minister for Fisheries and Ports, Nitesh Rane, and Swedish Consul General Sven Ostberg. Minister Rane emphasized that the project, backed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, will play a crucial role in reducing Mumbai’s traffic congestion and carbon footprint.

Proposed Routes and Benefits

The initial e-water taxi routes will connect:
1. Gateway of India to Elephanta
2. Gateway of India to Alibaug

These routes will offer a faster, greener, and more efficient alternative to road travel, which is often plagued by severe traffic delays.

Commitment to Safety, Sustainability, and Affordability

Under the agreement with Candela, the Swedish company is committed to ensuring:
Passenger safety as the top priority
Environmental sustainability with zero-emission operations
Affordable fares for the public

The Maharashtra government has pledged full support in acquiring necessary permits to expedite the project’s launch.

Sweden’s Interest in Maharashtra’s Port Development

Beyond the e-water taxi initiative, Sweden has expressed interest in Maharashtra’s port modernization. Minister Rane has invited a Swedish delegation to visit Sassoon Dock in early April to explore investment opportunities. Following this visit, the Swedish Consulate will submit a proposal outlining port modernization strategies, with an aim to transform Sassoon Dock into a model port.

Next Steps

Swedish officials will soon present a detailed proposal to the Maharashtra government. Upon approval, the pilot project will commence, potentially setting the stage for a nationwide expansion of sustainable water transport solutions.
