Mumbai on Edge: Police Commissioner Deven Bharti Warns Citizens to Stay Indoors as City Battles Flood Fury

Mumbai: Mumbai has been battered by relentless rains for the second consecutive day, plunging several areas into severe waterlogging and travel chaos. With high tides worsening the flooding, the city’s lifeline has come to a standstill. The Mumbai Police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have gone on maximum alert, bracing for emergencies as stranded citizens struggle to move through submerged streets.

On Tuesday, Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, joined by Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha and BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, addressed the media and issued a video statement assuring residents of immediate help. “All control rooms are active 24/7. Essential services will not be allowed to collapse. Citizens’ safety is our top priority,” Bharti declared.

In an early morning post at 9 AM, Mumbai Police issued a direct appeal to Mumbaikars:
“Step out only if necessary. Stay away from the seashore during high tide. In case of emergency—you will find us around the corner for help.”

Authorities have further asked private companies to allow employees to work from home, easing pressure on the city’s already strained public transport system. Meanwhile, police personnel have been deployed across sensitive pockets to provide quick relief in case of roadblocks, traffic jams, or medical emergencies.

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of more heavy showers in the next 24 hours, officials fear the situation could escalate further if rains continue at the same intensity.
