Mumbai, October 23 — A portion of an old Salvation Army Welfare Association building in Madanpura, South Mumbai, collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, leaving seven people injured and triggering a massive rescue and relief operation by city authorities.

The incident took place around 12:30 pm when the first floor of the ground-plus-one structure suddenly gave way, sending debris and dust flying across the narrow lane. Panic spread quickly as residents and shopkeepers rushed out to safety.

Teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Mumbai Fire Brigade, and Mumbai Police reached the site within minutes. Four fire engines and multiple rescue vans were deployed to clear rubble and search for anyone trapped beneath the collapsed section.

Injured shifted to Nair and Bhatia Hospitals

According to BMC officials, seven persons sustained injuries in the incident.

  • Ghulam Rasool (24) and Mohammad Sayed (59) were admitted to Nair Hospital and are said to be out of danger.
  • Arif (29), Sattar (35), Mohammad (35), Shamsul (29), and Catherine (45) were treated at Bhatia Hospital for minor injuries and discharged after first aid.

BMC orders structural audit of adjoining buildings

Civic engineers cordoned off the area and evacuated nearby residents as a precaution. “A team is assessing the structural stability of the adjoining buildings to prevent further danger,” a BMC official said.

The Salvation Army building, several decades old, had already been listed as dilapidated in BMC records. Locals allege they had repeatedly complained about its poor condition and urged authorities to take action long before the collapse.
