Samajwadi Party to Contest BMC Elections Alone, No Alliance with Congress or Thackeray Factions: Abu Azmi

Mumbai, October 23 — In a major political development, Samajwadi Party (SP) Maharashtra president Abu Asim Azmi on Wednesday announced that his party will contest the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections independently, ruling out alliances with the Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) or the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Azmi launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing it of “betraying the people’s trust” in Bihar. “What Congress did in Bihar was wrong. The people of Bihar and the entire nation will not forgive them,” Azmi said, signalling a decisive break from the INDIA bloc narrative.

No alliance with Uddhav or Raj Thackeray

Azmi ruled out any tie-up with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena or Raj Thackeray’s MNS, recalling past remarks made in the Assembly.

“We will not ally with Uddhav Thackeray, who once said he was proud of demolishing the Babri Masjid. Nor with Raj Thackeray, who has repeatedly targeted Biharis in Maharashtra,” Azmi said.

Criticism of religious restrictions and police action

Commenting on recent controversies surrounding religious practices, Azmi condemned the FIR filed against women offering Namaz at Shaniwar Wada, Pune. “It is not a religious place, and the FIR is unjustified. Similarly, banning Namaz at Bibi Ka Maqbara in Sambhajinagar is equally wrong,” he said.

Azmi accuses BJP of divisive politics

The SP leader accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using religion and nationalism as political tools. “The BJP wins elections by creating divisions — Hindu versus Muslim, India versus Pakistan. They have no real issue to show to the people,” Azmi said.

Attacks Yogi Adityanath; defends Akhilesh Yadav

Taking a swipe at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Azmi labelled him a “priest of hatred,” arguing that terrorism stems from injustice and animosity. “You play cricket with Pakistan, and the same money goes to fund terrorism,” he remarked.

Defending SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, Azmi said, “Akhilesh is a leader chosen by the people. He has risen through hard work, not dynasty politics. Today’s voters understand leadership and performance.”
