In the aftermath of clashes following the Ram Mandir inauguration in Ayodhya, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) faced fresh challenges as social media posts continued to incite tensions. Within days, at least three FIRs were registered in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai, leading to the arrest of nine individuals.
The first case unfolded in Trombay, where Mumbai Police made two arrests after a person posted a misleading video claiming that “arms had been delivered” in the Cheetah Camp area, predicting violence and urging people to stay indoors. Although the information was false, the video rapidly circulated on local WhatsApp groups, causing panic and prompting some shop closures.
As concerned citizens reached out to the police, authorities reassured them that no such incident had occurred. Upon identifying the source of the panic-inducing video, the police arrested Irfan Shaikh and Vijay Sandge, residents of Trombay. An FIR was registered against them, and during questioning, the police sought to uncover the motive behind spreading the misleading information.
In a second incident in the Nehru Nagar area of Kurla (east), a social media status posted by a local resident led to a group of men assaulting his brother at his shop. The escalating tension resulting from social media content is a cause for concern, and law enforcement authorities are taking swift action to curb the dissemination of false information and prevent further incidents. The incidents underscore the need for responsible social media use and the potential consequences of spreading misinformation in sensitive times. Authorities are urging citizens to verify information before sharing and to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions in the region.
