In a resounding display of unity and resilience, the call for Kisan Tractor Vehicle Parades on Republic Day by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) witnessed massive participation across 27 states of India. The parade, aimed at putting an end to corporate exploitation, protecting agriculture, and upholding the essence of a democratic India, garnered support from farmers, workers, trade unions, students, youth, and various sections of society.

Despite challenging weather conditions, especially in North India, tens of thousands of tractors and vehicles joined millions of farmers in the parades, held in 484 districts. The SKM lauded the remarkable success of this patriotic action, emphasizing the strengthening of unity between farmers and workers at the grassroots level.

Participants of the parades took a solemn pledge to intensify their struggle against the pro-corporate and anti-farmer policies of the Modi Government. The demands include legalizing MSP@C2+50% with guaranteed procurement for all crops, comprehensive loan waiver for farmers and farm workers, halting the privatization of the electricity sector, reducing input costs, ensuring government-controlled and universal crop insurance, and addressing the Lakhimpur Kheri massacre.

The SKM, in its commitment to the cause, announced a Grameen Bharat Bandh on February 16, 2024, supported by trade unions calling for an Industrial/Sectoral Strike. The SKM anticipates rural India coming to a standstill on that day, marking a significant step in their ongoing struggle.

Highlighting the devastating impact of corporatization on agriculture, the SKM underscored the agrarian crisis that has resulted in the suicides of 1,00,474 Indian farmers between 2014 and 2022. Despite significant debt write-offs for corporates, the farmers’ debts remain untouched. The SKM reiterated its stance against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, branding him as the most anti-farmer leader in India’s history, accusing him of betraying promises made during elections.

As the SKM extends its struggle in the days to come, the resounding success of the tractor parades serves as a potent warning to the BJP-led Union Government against pursuing policies detrimental to the interests of farmers, workers, and the broader populace.
