Mumbai: Hafiz Abdul Rahman Makki, the brother-in-law of Mumbai attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed and the deputy chief of the banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), passed away on Friday in Lahore, Pakistan. Makki, who was 76, reportedly died of a heart attack while undergoing treatment for high diabetes at a private hospital.

The JuD confirmed Makki’s demise, stating that he had been unwell for several days. Known as a close associate of Hafiz Saeed, Makki had played a prominent role in the JuD’s activities before being convicted on terror financing charges in 2020 by an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan. He served six months of imprisonment for his involvement in financing terrorism.

Makki had been keeping a low profile since his conviction but remained a significant figure in Pakistan’s Islamist circles. His association with Hafiz Saeed and involvement in Jamaat-ud-Dawa marked him as a key figure in Pakistan’s extremist networks.
