Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday unveiled a five-point agenda to deepen India-Canada collaboration, targeting sectors ranging from clean energy and critical minerals to artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and food processing. The announcement came during a meeting with business leaders in New Delhi, emphasizing shared economic opportunities and strategic growth.

Clean Energy and Nuclear Cooperation
Modi highlighted clean energy as a top priority for both nations. “Today, we have strengthened cooperation in nuclear energy and secured long-term uranium supply agreements,” he said, referring to engagements with Canadian uranium producer Cameco. He also suggested joint development in small modular reactors, advanced reactors, and the broader nuclear value chain, signaling a push for sustainable energy solutions.

Critical Minerals and Supply Chain Resilience
The Prime Minister emphasized building robust supply chains for critical minerals, a key input for batteries and energy storage. “Canada’s technological expertise combined with India’s manufacturing scale can create resilient and globally competitive supply networks,” Modi said, underlining the potential for industrial collaboration.

Infrastructure and Capital Engagement
Outlining infrastructure as the second pillar, Modi noted India’s record allocation of $130 billion in the national budget and a total investment of $1.3 trillion under the National Infrastructure Pipeline. He cited Canadian pension funds’ investments of $100 billion in India as a demonstration of trust and invited further participation from Canadian investors in India’s growth story.

Emerging Technologies and AI Collaboration
On artificial intelligence, Modi suggested creating joint AI compute corridors and innovation sandboxes to support startups, highlighting India-Canada collaboration in next-generation technologies.

Advanced Manufacturing and Food Processing
The fourth focus area, advanced manufacturing, includes electronics, aerospace, and engineering. Modi proposed strengthening global value chains by combining Canada’s technological strengths with India’s production capacity. The fifth area, food processing, emphasizes rapid expansion of mega food parks, cold chains, and testing laboratories, representing another avenue for mutually beneficial cooperation.

Launch of Strategic Energy Partnership
Earlier on Monday, India and Canada officially launched a Strategic Energy Partnership aimed at boosting bilateral trade and cooperation in clean energy, critical minerals, and nuclear sectors. Speaking alongside PM Modi, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the partnership a “generational opportunity” for both nations. Carney highlighted India’s projected doubling of energy demand by 2040, plans to add 500 gigawatts of renewable capacity, and a significant increase in LNG usage, positioning Canada as a key partner in achieving these targets.

The five-pronged roadmap reflects India’s commitment to broadening economic engagement with Canada across strategic sectors, reinforcing the evolving partnership as a cornerstone for future trade, technology exchange, and sustainable development initiatives.
