Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has assured that his government will extend full support to the victim of the alleged sexual assault at Anna University, as political drama unfolded in the state assembly over the sensitive issue. Stalin reiterated the state’s commitment to ensuring justice and emphasized that the swift arrest of the accused reflects the government’s firm stance on tackling such crimes.

Speaking during the winter session of the Tamil Nadu assembly, Stalin expressed his deep concern over the incident but refrained from directly naming the university, emphasizing the institution’s significant contribution. “Members have mentioned the name of a university here. However, I don’t want to name it or defame it, because it has contributed to all of us. With that sentiment, I am leaving the name aside,” Stalin said, adding that such an incident should never have occurred. “Sexual assault on a student is cruel. No one can accept what happened to a student in Chennai,” he stated.

While condemning the assault, Stalin took the opportunity to address the political wrangling that had erupted in the assembly. “Legislators have spoken on this issue, and except for one, all have expressed genuine concern. This one member, however, has spoken only to tarnish this government’s image,” he said, directing his comments toward the opposition.

The chief minister slammed the opposition for politicizing the issue, asserting that the government’s sole focus was on supporting the victim and ensuring that legal justice is served. “The opposition asks, ‘Who is that, sir?’ If you really have evidence, please provide it to the SIT that is investigating the case. Don’t indulge in cheap activities for short-term political benefits,” Stalin remarked, urging the opposition to refrain from using the incident for political gain.

Stalin also stressed that the Tamil Nadu government maintains a firm and unyielding stance against crimes committed against women. “Some are trying to use this single incident to claim that women are unsafe, but this narrative will not resonate with the public,” he added, defending the state’s record on women’s safety.

The case in question involves a second-year student from Anna University who reported being sexually assaulted on campus in December. According to the student’s complaint, the accused assaulted her after threatening her while she was speaking with a friend. Following the complaint, the police swiftly arrested the accused, and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is currently handling the case.
