Solapur: The first-ever elections to the newly constituted Angar Nagar Panchayat in Mohol taluka have turned into a political battleground, drawing statewide attention as rival factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) clash over dominance in the region.

For years, former NCP MLA Rajan Patil exercised unquestioned control over the Angar Gram Panchayat. But with the gram panchayat recently upgraded to a Nagar Panchayat, the inaugural elections have become a symbol of prestige and political authority. The contest intensified further after Rajan Patil quit Ajit Pawar’s NCP last month and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), leading many to believe the newly formed civic body would fall into BJP’s lap without resistance.

Defying these expectations, Ajit Pawar countered Patil’s dominance by nominating Ujwala Thite as NCP’s candidate for the post of Nagar Panchayat president. Opposing her was Prajakta Patil, Rajan Patil’s daughter-in-law, who entered the race as the BJP-backed contender.

Tension escalated earlier this week when Thite filed her nomination amid heavy police deployment. The administration provided security after she accused BJP workers of threatening her and trying to obstruct her access to the nomination centre.

However, in a sudden twist, election officials rejected Thite’s nomination, instantly clearing the path for Prajakta Patil to become the first president of the Angar Nagar Panchayat. The decision triggered jubilant celebrations among BJP workers, who burst crackers and danced outside the office.

A viral video from the celebration has now sparked a political storm. In the clip, Rajan Patil’s son Balraje Patil is seen atop a party worker’s shoulders, jubilantly pointing at the camera while angrily declaring: “Ajit Pawar… saglyancha naad karaycha pan Angarkarancha nahi!”

The video prompted strong reactions from NCP (Sharad Pawar) leaders. MLA Rohit Pawar criticised the behaviour, writing on X that he was saddened to see such language used against Ajit Pawar. He urged Rajan Patil to guide the younger generation, warning that power is temporary and that “BJP’s castles built on vote theft can collapse anytime.”

NCP MLC Amol Mitkari also slammed the remarks, accusing the BJP of promoting a culture of arrogance and disrespect.
