“Maunvrat”: Shashi Tharoor Declines to Speak on Operation Sindoor Debate, Sparks Political Buzz

New Delhi: In a surprising political moment, Congress MP and former diplomat Shashi Tharoor on Monday, July 28, chose silence over statement as he refused to comment on the ongoing ‘Operation Sindoor’ debate in the Lok Sabha. When approached by reporters on his way into Parliament, Tharoor simply replied, “Maunvrat, maunvrat”—signalling a vow of silence.

According to a News18 report citing party sources, the Congress leadership had asked Tharoor to represent the party during the high-voltage debate on the government’s military operation against terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. However, Tharoor is said to have declined the request, reportedly unwilling to criticise the government’s action, which he views as a necessary counter-terror move.

The development comes as Parliament prepares for a sixteen-hour marathon debate on Operation Sindoor, India’s cross-border response to the brutal April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. The session is expected to see intense exchanges between the NDA and the INDIA bloc on issues of national security, foreign policy, and military action.

Tharoor’s silence, however, has added a layer of intrigue to the proceedings. With his vast experience in foreign affairs and recent participation in global counter-terror delegations, many expected him to offer critical insights. Speculation is now rife that Speaker Om Birla might still invite Tharoor to speak during Tuesday’s session, considering his international expertise.

Meanwhile, the Opposition alliance held a joint strategy session ahead of the debate. Among their key demands is an official response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on former US President Donald Trump’s claim that he helped mediate a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor.

On the government’s side, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged all MPs to maintain the dignity of the House and refrain from using language that aligns with Pakistan’s narrative. “Let’s show respect for our forces and for the truth,” Rijiju said, appealing for restraint and responsibility.
