San Francisco: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has claimed that his social media platform X was hit by a “massive cyberattack” on Monday, causing multiple outages across the globe. Musk also suggested that the attack might have originated from Ukraine, though he admitted that the exact details remain unclear.
“We’re not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyberattack to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area,” Musk said in an interview with Fox News.
The outage, which lasted several hours, saw X repeatedly going offline, getting restored, and crashing again. Thousands of users reported issues with the platform, with outage tracker Downdetector registering a peak of 2,612 complaints at 3 PM, followed by another wave between 6 PM and 7:30 PM, affecting 1,312 users.
Confirming the incident, Musk took to X to label it as a “large-scale coordinated cyberattack”.
“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing,” he tweeted.
As of the latest update, X remains unstable, with engineers working to ensure full restoration. The true source of the attack remains unknown, but Musk’s remarks about Ukraine have sparked speculation.
