In a significant move, the Manipur government on Saturday, December 9, announced the lifting of the temporary suspension of mobile internet services across nine districts, including Churachandpur and Thoubal. The decision was made after a comprehensive review of the law and order situation in the state.
According to an official order issued by Commissioner (Home) N Ashok Kumar, the withdrawal of the ban applies to Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Jiribam, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Pherzawl districts. “The state government, after reviewing the prevailing law and order situation in the state and its possible co-relation with the general operation of internet services, decided to lift all forms of temporary suspension of internet and data services in these areas with immediate effect,” the order stated.
The internet ban was initially imposed to curb the spread of misinformation and maintain public order during a period of heightened tension in the state. Over the past few weeks, stakeholders from various communities and political representatives had urged the government to restore internet connectivity, citing the need for digital access for educational, economic, and social activities.
