The Mandi Lok Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh is poised for yet another riveting electoral showdown as the 2024 elections draw near. With the Congress’s Pratibha Singh and Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut emerging as key contenders, the electoral battle for Mandi promises to be closely watched.

Historically, the Mandi seat has been a hotly contested battleground alternating between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress every two elections since 1991. This electoral seesaw has witnessed the participation of prominent figures in Himachal Pradesh politics, including notable leaders from both parties and members of the royal families.

The seat’s historical significance is underscored by its preference for members of the royal family, with leaders like Raja Joginder Sen Bahadur and Virbhadra Singh leaving indelible marks on its electoral landscape. Notably, Virbhadra Singh’s electoral triumph in 1971, securing a record 72% vote share, remains a landmark moment in Mandi’s political history.

The Congress’s dominance in Mandi faced a temporary setback during the Janata Party era, but it swiftly regained ground with Virbhadra Singh’s return to power in 1980. Subsequently, the seat witnessed intense battles between Congress stalwarts like Sukh Ram and BJP contenders such as Maheshwar Singh.

In recent years, the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency has seen a dynamic interplay of political forces, with Pratibha Singh and Kangana Ranaut emerging as formidable contenders in the upcoming elections. Pratibha Singh, a member of the royal family and widow of the late Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, brings with her a wealth of political experience and influence in the region.

On the other hand, Kangana Ranaut, known for her outspoken nature and familial ties to Himachal Pradesh politics, presents a fresh and unconventional challenge to the established political order. Despite being a newcomer to electoral politics, Kangana’s lineage and popularity lend credence to her candidacy, making her a formidable opponent.

The electoral dynamics in Mandi are further complicated by the intricate assembly constituency landscape, with 17 assembly seats comprising the Lok Sabha segment. While the BJP currently holds sway over most assembly seats, the Congress remains a formidable force, particularly in areas where Pratibha Singh enjoys considerable influence.

As the electoral battle for Mandi unfolds, all eyes will be on the candidates as they vie for the support of the electorate in a contest that epitomizes the essence of democratic competition and political plurality in Himachal Pradesh.
