Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu made veiled criticisms of India’s approach during a press conference following his recent visit to China. Amid an ongoing diplomatic spat between India and the Maldives, Muizzu emphasized that being a smaller nation doesn’t grant others the license to bully. This statement follows derogatory remarks by Maldivian politicians against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, leading to the suspension of three ministers.

China expressed its staunch opposition to external interference in the Maldives’ internal affairs and affirmed its support for the nation’s sovereignty and independence. A joint statement highlighted mutual commitments to safeguarding core interests and denounced external interference.

During his visit to China, Muizzu urged Beijing to enhance efforts in attracting more Chinese tourists to the Maldives, recalling that China was the top market pre-Covid. China and the Maldives signed 20 agreements, including those related to tourism cooperation aimed at increasing Chinese tourist arrivals. The comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two nations for 2024-2028 and collaboration on the Belt and Road initiative were among the key areas covered in the signed documents.
