Mumbai: In a major festive season boost, the Maharashtra government has approved round-the-clock operations for commercial establishments across the state. The new circular, issued by the state labour department on October 1, permits shopping malls, multiplexes, restaurants, shops, and complexes to remain open 24×7 — fulfilling a long-standing demand from both businesses and consumers.
The directive, however, excludes establishments where liquor is served or sold, which must continue to follow existing regulations.
Officials said the move clears years of ambiguity over business hours and is expected to increase employment opportunities, enhance consumer convenience, and boost revenue during the upcoming festive season.
The announcement comes just ahead of Dussehra, spreading cheer among traders and shoppers in the run-up to Diwali and Christmas. Business associations have welcomed the decision, calling it a progressive step that aligns Maharashtra with global retail and hospitality practices.
