Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that sitting MP Shrikant Shinde, son of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, will be the Mahayuti alliance’s candidate from the Kalyan Lok Sabha constituency. However, there is still no clarity on who will contest from the crucial Thane Lok Sabha seat, which is considered a stronghold of Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction.
Fadnavis’ announcement resolves the tug-of-war between the BJP and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena over the Kalyan seat. However, a similar tussle is ongoing for the Thane constituency, with both parties keen to field their candidates.
Thane is a key battleground, as it is Eknath Shinde’s home turf. Names like Pratap Sarnaik, former mayor Naresh Maske, and former MLC Ravindra Phatak from the Shinde group are being discussed, but they face opposition from local BJP leaders.
The BJP is also eyeing the Thane seat, with speculations that senior party leaders, including Dr. Sanjeev Naik, are interested in contesting from there.
While the Kalyan candidature is settled, with Shrikant Shinde likely to be officially announced soon, the Thane seat remains a bone of contention within the Mahayuti alliance.
The tussle highlights the delicate power dynamics within the ruling coalition, as both parties aim to secure crucial constituencies ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
