The Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) led by Prakash Ambedkar cancelled the candidature of its candidate Mangaldas Bandal from Shirur Lok Sabha constituency on Saturday, a day after he met BJP leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Indapur.

On Friday, Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar attended an election rally for NCP candidate Sunetra Pawar in Baramati. After the rally, Fadnavis visited the residence of a party worker and industrialist Dashrath Mane, where Bandal was also present, according to party sources to Indian Express..

The VBA announced the cancellation of Bandal’s ticket, with a spokesperson stating to Indian Express., “Mangaldas Bandal will not be the VBA’s candidate from Shirur’s seat. He has indulged in anti-party activity and has lost his candidature.”

Reacting to the decision, Bandal claimed he only attended the meeting at Mane’s residence as a “courtesy visit” since they share family relations and were both former Zilla Parishad members. He said, “When Fadnavis visited Mane’s residence, I was also present there. But it was a courtesy visit…What was wrong with it?”

Bandal expressed his intention to contest the Shirur seat as an independent candidate, saying, “I have decided to contest as an Independent candidate [from Shirur], there will be no backtracking from the poll ring.”

The VBA’s decision to cancel Bandal’s ticket from Shirur has raised speculation that his meeting with Fadnavis may have played a role, given the political rivalry between the VBA and the BJP-led alliance in Maharashtra.

The Shirur Lok Sabha constituency is scheduled to go to polls in the fourth phase of voting in Maharashtra on May 13.

While the VBA has alleged “anti-party activities” by Bandal, the latter has defended his presence at the meeting as a personal courtesy. The incident highlights the intense political maneuvering and rivalries in the high-stakes Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra.
