Mumbai: In a major development following the Delhi car blast, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) conducted a late-evening raid on Tuesday at the residence of a Mumbra-based teacher, suspected to have links with Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
The individual, identified as Ibrahim Abidi, a 34-year-old Urdu teacher from the Kausa area in Thane district, was reportedly under watch for several weeks after his online activities drew the attention of central intelligence agencies. Abidi taught at a local madrassa and also conducted weekend Urdu classes at a Kurla mosque.
According to reports, ATS officials recovered several electronic gadgets, including a mobile phone, hard disk, and storage devices, during the search operation at his rented apartment in Ifayat Housing Society. These items have been sent for forensic analysis to determine whether he had any direct or indirect contact with extremist groups.
A senior ATS official confirmed that Abidi has been taken in for questioning but clarified that no formal arrest has been made yet. “Preliminary evidence points to suspicious digital activity. We are currently verifying his online communications and the nature of his contacts,” the officer said.
Security has been tightened across Mumbai and adjoining areas, with surveillance enhanced on individuals flagged by intelligence agencies for suspected radical connections.
