Prayagraj is witnessing an especially auspicious period during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela as thousands of devotees observe ‘Kalpvas’—a sacred practice of austerity and penance on the banks of the Sangam. The ritual, which concludes on February 12 (Magh Purnima), is believed to bestow devotees with the spiritual benefits of a thousand years of penance.

To ensure a smooth and secure experience for pilgrims, authorities have announced a complete vehicle ban in the entire Kumbh Mela area from 4 AM on Tuesday (February 11). Only essential and emergency service vehicles will be permitted.

To prevent congestion, all public and private vehicles from outside Prayagraj are being directed to designated parking zones, and pilgrims are required to walk to the bathing ghats. Furthermore, the entire city of Prayagraj will be declared a ‘no vehicle zone’ from 5 PM on February 11, with exemptions only for emergency services. These restrictions will remain in place until the Magh Purnima bath concludes on February 12.

Even ‘Kalpvasis’—devotees who set up temporary tents along the riverbank—must comply with these traffic regulations. Authorities have urged all pilgrims to follow the rules to ensure a peaceful and organized completion of the sacred Kalpvas period.
