Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has criticised the attitude of governments at both the Centre and in Maharashtra, saying their treatment of the Leaders of the Opposition goes against democratic values. His remarks come amid a debate over protocol and representation during the Republic Day parade.
Speaking to the media, Sanjay Raut stressed that the position of Leader of the Opposition holds constitutional importance and must be respected, irrespective of which party is in power. He pointed out that senior leaders currently holding these posts deserve proper recognition at national events.
Sanjay Raut said, “Whether the government is in Maharashtra or at the Centre, their attitude towards the Leader of the Opposition is not right for democracy. Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge are the Leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha respectively, and both are very senior leaders.”
He further added that established protocol should be followed during major national functions. Emphasising the Republic Day celebrations, Raut said, “As per protocol, both Leaders of the Opposition should be given due respect and an appropriate place in the Republic Day parade.”
