Mumbai: KEM Hospital, a cornerstone of healthcare for Mumbaikars, marked its centenary with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde proposing the construction of the Ayushman Centenary Tower to ensure sufficient space for patients. Speaking at the event, Shinde emphasized the hospital’s vital role and announced the implementation of a Zero Prescription Policy to enhance patient care.

The 99th anniversary celebrations of Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College and KEM Hospital were held on the hospital premises, with dignitaries including Health Minister Prakash Abitkar, MLAs Kalidas Kolambkar and Sunil Shinde, BMC Commissioner I.S. Chahal, and KEM Dean Dr. Sangeeta Rawat.

Praising the hospital’s unwavering commitment to patient care, Shinde said, “KEM has been a lifeline for Mumbaikars for nearly a century, providing world-class healthcare. The proposed Ayushman Tower will address the growing space requirements and ensure comfort for patients and their families.”

Highlighting KEM’s achievements, he recalled milestones such as India’s first heart surgery in 1968, a successful heart transplant in 2024, and the birth of India’s first test-tube baby in 1987 under Dr. Indira Hinduja. Shinde also lauded the hospital’s advancements in robotic surgeries and organ donation programs, recently recognized at a Delhi awards ceremony.

As part of the celebrations, Amitabh Bachchan inaugurated a fatty liver treatment clinic and pledged to promote awareness as its brand ambassador. Shinde expressed gratitude to Bachchan for his contribution.

The Deputy CM also proposed creating a museum dedicated to doctors at KEM, underscoring the institution’s rich legacy in training globally renowned medical professionals. The event concluded with the release of a commemorative souvenir and an annual report.

The centenary year will serve as a foundation for future advancements, ensuring KEM continues to lead in healthcare innovation, Shinde added.
