Government pauses FCRA Amendment Bill 2026 amid rising political opposition

New Delhi: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) reviewing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Monday approved all 14 amendments proposed by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), rejecting every amendment put forward by the opposition MPs.

After six months of discussions and deliberations, JPC Chairperson Jagdambika Pal confirmed that a total of 44 amendments were debated. “This was our final meeting. After detailed discussions, 14 amendments were accepted based on a majority vote. The opposition had suggested amendments, but they only received 10 votes in favor, while 16 votes opposed them,” Pal told ANI following the meeting.

However, opposition MPs strongly criticized the meeting, accusing the JPC chairperson of undermining democratic processes. “It was a farcical exercise. We were not heard. Pal acted in a dictatorial manner,” said an opposition leader.
