Dehradun: Uttarakhand made history on Monday by becoming the first state in India to enforce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a unified set of laws that supersedes religious and customary laws on matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and maintenance. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the UCC portal, which will enable citizens to register marriages, divorces, inheritance rights, live-in relationships, and their termination under the new law. He also released the implementation rules.

“Today is a historic day for not only Uttarakhand but the entire country. The UCC law, which ensures equality, is being rolled out in the state. The real credit goes to the people of Uttarakhand who supported me. With this rollout, we also pay our tributes to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the other members of the Constituent Assembly who drafted the Constitution of India,” Dhami said at a ceremony in Dehradun.

The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, acknowledging that it was only under their leadership that Uttarakhand was able to implement the UCC. Dhami also reminisced about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) election promise during the 2022 Assembly elections. “We promised that after our government came to power, the UCC would be our first decision. And today, that promise has been fulfilled.”
