In a campaign event with the NAACP on Sunday, May 19, President Joe Biden made another verbal blunder, claiming that the pandemic occurred during his tenure as vice president. Biden, who finished his term in January 2017, seemed to forget that the pandemic began three years after the Obama administration left office.
“When I was vice president, things were kind of bad during the pandemic and what happened was, Barack said to me, ‘Go to Detroit! Help fix it,’” the president, 81, remarked during his speech. He continued, “Well, the poor mayor he’s spent more time with me than he ever thought he’s gonna have to!”
The video of this latest gaffe quickly went viral on social media. Reactions from users on X, formerly known as Twitter, were swift and sharp. One user commented, “Anyone who still supports this clown needs to be institutionalized.” Another added, “Please, GOD, make him stop…,” expressing frustration over Biden’s frequent verbal missteps.
Others questioned his ability to run for reelection. “There’s no way this man runs against Trump in November, there’s just no way this is really going to happen… They gotta have a backup plan, right?” one user speculated. Another noted, “He never knows where he is or what he’s doing…”
Some users pointed out the factual inaccuracy of Biden’s statement. “Was there no teleprompter? Does he realize the pandemic began in 2020?” one wrote. Another user added, “Thank God he blinked. The earlier video was worrying as he didn’t give his eyes any rest at all,” highlighting concerns about Biden’s physical well-being during his speeches.
Criticism also came from those who are typically supportive of Biden. “This has gotten out of control. Even Joe’s staunch supporters must admit he’s too far gone,” one user lamented. Another sarcastically remarked, “Omgosh, he’s telling another whopper. Will it ever stop?”
In a lighter tone, one user speculated, “What pandemic was that? A secret one we didn’t know about?” Another guessed, “He prolly talking about the swine flu pandemic. Hopefully that it is because this a good one if it isn’t,” referring to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic that occurred during Biden’s vice presidency.
