In a significant administrative move, the Central government has appointed Jishnu Dev Varma as the new Governor of Maharashtra as part of a large-scale reshuffle of Governors and Lieutenant Governors across the country.
The appointments were officially announced late Thursday night through a statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, bringing an end to months of vacancy in the state’s Raj Bhavan.
The announcement comes at a crucial time when Maharashtra is currently holding its Budget Session in the state Assembly, making the development politically significant.
Maharashtra Governor Post Vacant for Six Months
The position of Maharashtra Governor had remained vacant since September 2025 following the resignation of C. P. Radhakrishnan.
Radhakrishnan stepped down after being elected as the Vice President of India, creating a leadership gap in the state’s constitutional post.
During the interim period, Acharya Devvrat, who serves as the Governor of Gujarat, was given additional charge of Maharashtra to manage the responsibilities of the office.
With the new appointment, Maharashtra will now have a full-time Governor once again.

Changes in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu
The reshuffle also brought major changes in several other states.
C. V. Ananda Bose resigned as Governor of West Bengal ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
Following his resignation, R. N. Ravi, who was serving as Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal.
Meanwhile, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has been appointed as the new Governor of Tamil Nadu.
Key Appointments Across States
The reshuffle also includes several other major gubernatorial appointments.
Shiv Pratap Shukla, the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, has now been appointed as Governor of Telangana.
In another important development, retired Army officer Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the Governor of Bihar.
Senior political leader Nand Kishore Yadav has been named as the new Governor of Nagaland.
Changes in Lieutenant Governor Posts
Apart from gubernatorial appointments, the reshuffle also brought changes to Lieutenant Governor positions.
Vinai Kumar Saxena, who currently serves as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, has been given the additional responsibility of Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.
At the same time, former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
In another change, Kavinder Gupta has been appointed as Governor of Himachal Pradesh after stepping down from the post of Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.
Major Administrative Reset Across the Country
Political observers say the reshuffle represents one of the largest reorganisations of constitutional posts in recent months.
The appointments are expected to play an important role in state governance, especially in states heading toward important political and administrative developments.
With the appointment of Jishnu Dev Varma, Maharashtra’s Raj Bhavan will once again have a permanent head during a politically significant period for the state.
