The Congress has made a significant organisational reshuffle in several states, appointing Rajasthan leader Sachin Pilot as the party’s new AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab at a time when the state unit is facing internal disagreements.
Pilot’s appointment comes amid growing tensions within the Punjab Congress over the leadership of state president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. The move is also being viewed as an attempt by the party’s central leadership to bring greater coordination among senior leaders in the state.
Former Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel has been moved to Assam as part of the latest changes announced by the Congress high command.
The organisational decisions were approved by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and will come into effect immediately.
AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal announced the appointments, saying the Congress president had reassigned and appointed party functionaries as AICC general secretaries and state in-charges.
Congress announces major state-level changes
Along with Pilot’s appointment in Punjab, the Congress has made several other changes to its state leadership structure.
Randeep Singh Surjewala has been given additional responsibility for Gujarat while continuing his existing role in Karnataka. Sukhdeo Bhagat has been appointed the party’s in-charge for Chhattisgarh, while Dr Sirivella Prasad will oversee Maharashtra.
P V Mohan has been appointed the Congress in-charge for Andhra Pradesh.
The party also praised the work of outgoing state in-charges. Venugopal said, “The party appreciates the contributions of the following outgoing General Secretary/In-charges — Jitendra Singh, Ramesh Chennithala and Manickam Tagore.”
Mukul Wasnik, meanwhile, will continue as an AICC general secretary.

Pilot’s elevation in Punjab comes just a day after a crucial meeting of senior Congress leaders in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by Rahul Gandhi and attended by Kharge, KC Venugopal and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The discussions focused largely on the continuing differences within the Punjab unit and possible ways to overcome the organisational stalemate.
The Congress leadership reportedly considered different options for restructuring the state organisation and reviewed feedback collected about senior Punjab leaders.
The decision to bring Pilot into the state leadership structure suggests that the party wants a leader capable of engaging with different sections of the organisation while attempting to reduce internal friction.
