Patna: The Janata Dal (United) has removed its Manipur unit president, Ksh. Biren Singh, amid rising speculations about its stance on the BJP-led government in the state. JD(U) national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan announced the decision on Wednesday, citing “indiscipline” as the reason for Singh’s removal. Ranjan emphasized that the party remains committed to supporting the BJP-led government in Manipur and strengthening the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Ksh. Biren Singh, in a letter to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, highlighted the party’s challenges in the state. He pointed out that after the 2022 assembly elections, six JD(U) candidates won, but five of them defected to the BJP. The matter is currently pending before the Speaker’s Tribunal under the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Singh further claimed that after JD(U) aligned with the INDIA bloc, the party withdrew support for the BJP government, resulting in the lone JD(U) MLA, Md Abdul Nasir, being shifted to the opposition bench in the last Assembly session.
The JD(U)’s decision to remove Ksh. Biren Singh is seen as a move to consolidate its position within the NDA and align with the BJP’s interests in Manipur, despite the internal challenges faced by the party in the state.
