Srinagar: Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday visited the border areas affected by recent cross-border shelling and assured locals that the government would take concrete steps to address their concerns.

Speaking to the media after his visit, Abdullah acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, “You have seen the damage here. Thankfully, there has been no loss of lives, but there has been damage to property. Damage assessment and compensation will be done.”

While expressing relief over the absence of casualties, the Chief Minister noted the urgent need for improved civilian protection infrastructure. “Community bunkers made here have not been utilised for a long time, and no new bunkers have been made in recent times. The locals have suggested that individual bunkers must be made,” he said.

Abdullah added that the state government is taking these concerns seriously and intends to formulate a new proposal. “The government will make a scheme and speak to the Central government about it,” he stated, indicating a move towards collaboration with the Centre to ensure better safety measures for border residents.

Reiterating the importance of peace in the region, the Chief Minister also emphasized, “We all want the ceasefire to continue.”
