New Delhi: In a bid to de-escalate growing military tensions between India and Pakistan, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in talks with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday morning. Jaishankar reassured that India’s approach to the ongoing situation has always been “measured and responsible,” a stance that continues despite the escalating conflict.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar wrote: “Had a conversation with US @SecRubio this morning. India’s approach has always been measured and responsible and remains so.”
According to a statement from the US Department of State, Secretary Rubio emphasized the importance of both nations identifying ways to de-escalate the current military standoff. Rubio expressed the United States’ commitment to facilitating “productive discussions” between India and Pakistan to avoid future disputes.
“Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. Secretary Rubio emphasized that both sides need to identify methods to de-escalate and re-establish direct communication to avoid miscalculation. He further proposed U.S. support in facilitating productive discussions to avert future disputes,” the statement from the US State Department read.
Earlier in the week, Rubio had also reached out to Jaishankar on Thursday to express his condolences for the tragic loss of 26 lives in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22. He reiterated the United States’ commitment to working with India in the fight against terrorism.
In his efforts to de-escalate the military conflict, Rubio also spoke with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, as well as Army Chief Asim Munir, calling for similar restraint on Pakistan’s part.
The United States has maintained a neutral and balanced approach in the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict, considering both nations as US allies and encouraging both sides to bring the conflict to an end. Rubio’s diplomatic engagement comes as the situation has intensified over the last few days, with both countries exchanging air strikes.
