Why Jagan Mohan Reddy’s Support Could Be a Game-Changer for NDA in Parliament

YSRCP Extends Support to NDA on Key Constitutional Bills

In a significant political development ahead of a crucial parliamentary vote, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has announced its support for the Centre on the proposed Delimitation and Constitutional Amendment Bills, strengthening the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in both Houses of Parliament.

The announcement was made by YSRCP Lok Sabha leader PV Midhun Reddy, who stated that the party’s concerns over the proposed delimitation exercise had been adequately addressed by the Union government.

According to him, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured that any increase in parliamentary representation would follow a flat 50% proportional rise, rather than a population-based redistribution—an assurance that appears to have resolved apprehensions among southern states.

“All YSRCP MPs will support the Constitutional Amendment Bill,” Midhun Reddy confirmed, signaling the party’s formal backing to the government’s legislative agenda.

50% Seat Increase Formula Eases Southern States’ Concerns

YSRCP General Secretary Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy elaborated that the proposed formula would ensure fairness among states.

He explained that under the plan, if a state currently has 40 Lok Sabha seats, it would gain 20 additional seats, while a state with 80 seats would receive 40 more, maintaining proportional balance without heavily favouring states with larger populations.

This clarification is important because southern states have long feared that delimitation based strictly on population could reduce their relative influence in Parliament, benefiting northern states with faster population growth.

By supporting a proportional expansion rather than a population-driven reallocation, the Centre appears to have secured the confidence of YSRCP, whose support could prove vital during voting.

Why YSRCP’s Support Matters for NDA

Though YSRCP is not part of the NDA, its parliamentary numbers can play a decisive role in passing constitutional legislation.

At present, the YSRCP has 4 members in the Lok Sabha and 7 in the Rajya Sabha, giving the government additional strength where every vote matters.

The NDA currently has 292 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 139 in the Rajya Sabha, but a two-thirds majority is needed to pass constitutional amendments such as the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill.

YSRCP’s support, therefore, improves the NDA’s chances of comfortably crossing the threshold, especially in the Rajya Sabha where margins are tighter.

Rahul Gandhi Expected to Speak Before Voting

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi is expected to address the Lok Sabha later in the day as the debate on the bills continues.

Voting on both the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Constitutional Amendment Bill is expected to begin at 4 PM, following several hours of discussion in Parliament.

The outcome of this vote could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, particularly if the delimitation process significantly expands the number of parliamentary seats.

Why is YSRCP supporting the Delimitation Bill?

YSRCP said it received assurances that seat increases would follow a flat 50% proportional formula, easing fears of population-based imbalance.

How many MPs does YSRCP have in Parliament?

YSRCP currently has 4 Lok Sabha MPs and 7 Rajya Sabha MPs.

Why is this support important for NDA?

Because constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority, YSRCP’s votes improve the NDA’s chances of passing the bills.

What is the proposed seat increase formula?

States would get a 50% increase in Lok Sabha seats—for example, 40 seats would become 60, and 80 seats would become 120.

When will the voting happen?

Voting on the bills is scheduled for 4 PM today, after parliamentary debate concludes.
