Toronto: A young Indian scholar pursuing higher studies in Canada lost his life in a shocking shooting incident near the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus, triggering concern among the Indian student community and prompting a high-level investigation by local authorities.
The victim, identified as Shivank Avasthi, was just 20 years old and was enrolled in an advanced academic programme. He was found critically injured with a gunshot wound in the Highland Creek Trail–Old Kingston Road area on Tuesday afternoon. Emergency responders reached the spot following a distress call, but the student succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
According to Toronto Police, the attackers escaped before officers arrived, and investigators are still working to determine how many individuals were involved and what led to the fatal shooting. No arrests have been made so far, and the case remains wide open.
Police officials confirmed that they responded to reports of a person in serious condition around mid-afternoon. Upon arrival, they discovered a male victim who had suffered a gunshot injury. Despite immediate response, he was declared dead on the spot.
Authorities have appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information, surveillance footage, or tips related to the incident to come forward through official police helplines or anonymous crime reporting services.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a young Indian student. In an official statement, the Consulate said it is in constant touch with Shivank Avasthi’s family and is extending all possible support while coordinating with Canadian authorities.
