Srinagar: The nation on Wednesday proudly commemorated Indian Army Day, marking the historic occasion when General (later Field Marshal) K. M. Cariappa, OBE, assumed office as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army on January 15, 1949. The day stands as a tribute to the valour, sacrifice, discipline, and unwavering professionalism of the men and women of the Indian Army, who continue to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation.
Army Day serves as a solemn reminder of the Indian Army’s enduring legacy and its steadfast commitment to the country under its revered motto, “Service Before Self.” From the icy heights of the Himalayas to the harsh deserts, dense jungles, and challenging frontiers, the Indian Army remains the nation’s shield, exemplifying courage, resilience, and selfless service in the face of adversity.

Celebrations Across Kashmir
In Kashmir, Army Day celebrations were held at Srinagar, Sharifabad, Uri, and Tangdhar. Wreath-laying ceremonies were organised and attended by senior military officials to honour fallen heroes. On the occasion, ex-servicemen (ESMs) were felicitated in recognition of their invaluable contributions and lifelong service to the nation.

The events highlighted the Army’s rich traditions and the enduring bond between serving soldiers, veterans, and the citizens they protect. Participants reflected on the sacrifices made by generations of soldiers who have laid down their lives in the line of duty.
