In a significant development amidst rising tensions in the region, India has once again urged its citizens to leave Lebanon. This advisory comes in light of reports indicating that Israel is preparing its troops for a possible invasion of the country.
The Indian Embassy in Beirut issued an updated advisory on Wednesday, strongly recommending Indian nationals refrain from traveling to Lebanon due to the recent developments and escalating violence. The embassy emphasized, “All Indian nationals already in Lebanon are also strongly advised to leave Lebanon.” The advisory further cautioned those who remain in the country to exercise extreme caution, limit their movements, and maintain communication with the embassy through the email address: cons.beirut@mea.gov.in, or the emergency phone number: +96176860128.
This urgent advisory follows a series of Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon, which have resulted in over 620 fatalities and thousands of injuries. Israel’s military chief, Herzi Halevi, has directed troops to continue airstrikes aimed at dismantling Hezbollah’s infrastructure and has prepared for a potential ground offensive.
Currently, there are nearly 4,000 Indian nationals residing in Lebanon, primarily engaged in the construction sector, agriculture, and other fields. Additionally, Indian Army personnel have been deployed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) since November 1998 to help maintain peace in the region.
This advisory is a reiteration of an earlier notice issued on August 1, which cautioned Indian citizens to leave Lebanon due to “potential threats in the region,” particularly following the escalation of tensions stemming from the killing of key leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah.
As the situation evolves, the Indian government continues to monitor the developments closely, prioritizing the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad. Travelers and expatriates in Lebanon are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
