New Delhi: The Indian government has refuted claims made by former US President Donald Trump that New Delhi has agreed to reduce import duties on American products. According to a report by The Times of India, the Centre clarified before a Parliamentary panel on Tuesday that it had made “no commitments to the US on the issue.”

The government has reportedly sought time until September to address the concerns repeatedly raised by Trump. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal, appearing before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, is said to have emphasized that India and the US are focused on negotiating a mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement rather than making immediate tariff cuts.

Trump, on Friday, accused India of imposing “massive tariffs” on American imports, claiming that his administration’s pressure had forced New Delhi to lower them. “India charges us massive tariffs. Massive. You can’t even sell anything in India. They have agreed, by the way; they want to cut their tariffs way down now because somebody is finally exposing them for what they have done,” ANI quoted Trump as saying.

The former US president has been vocal about what he perceives as “unfair” trade practices by several countries, including India. His administration has announced reciprocal tariffs on various nations, set to take effect next month.
