INDIA Bloc Mulls Non-Political Face for Vice President, Ex-ISRO Scientist M Annadurai Among Probables

Mumbai: In a dramatic twist to the upcoming Vice Presidential elections, the Opposition’s INDIA bloc is considering fielding a non-political, non-party candidate in a bid to challenge the NDA’s nominee CP Radhakrishnan with a “consensus figure” who could appeal across party lines.

Media reports revealed that the names under active discussion include a Dalit leader, a respected scientist, and even a descendant of Mahatma Gandhi. Among the frontrunners is former ISRO scientist M Annadurai, celebrated for his pivotal role in India’s Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan missions. His potential candidature, Opposition leaders believe, could strike a chord with both the scientific community and the larger public.

The strategy to push forward a non-political candidate is aimed at avoiding partisan divides while presenting a moral and intellectual counterweight to the ruling alliance’s pick. “The idea is to rally behind a personality whose stature goes beyond party politics,” an Opposition insider said.

A crucial meeting of Opposition leaders is scheduled today at 12:30 pm at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi, where the final decision on the nominee is expected. Senior leaders from Congress, TMC, DMK, NCP(SP), Shiv Sena (UBT), and Left parties are set to attend.

The Vice Presidential election will be held on September 9, with nominations closing on August 21.
