Aaditya Thackeray Slams BMC Over Mumbai Floods, Calls It a “Scam”

Mumbai: Mumbai once again reeled under the impact of heavy rains on Monday, as several low-lying areas were submerged within hours of the downpour. Amid growing public anger, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray launched a fierce attack on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), questioning its preparedness and alleging large-scale corruption behind the city’s poor infrastructure.

Taking to social media platform X, Thackeray said the absence of accountability in BMC operations had left Mumbaikars to suffer every monsoon. “The BMC has been run directly by the state government for the last three years with no elected representatives due to the absence of elections. But the absence of an election is also the absence of accountability,” he wrote.

Demanding transparency from municipal officials, Thackeray pressed for detailed answers on Mumbai’s flood-prevention measures. “With the early warning and alerts we have received for the rains over the past 2 days, I’m expecting the @mybmc to put out: How many pumps were put into action? How many pumping stations were working at full capacity? How many new flooding spots were reported this year and why?” he questioned.

Thackeray alleged that mismanagement and scams in civic road contracts had left Mumbai’s infrastructure crumbling. “The roads, due to a scam, have been in a mess,” he said, recalling how the Andheri subway and SEEPZ were flooded in just ten minutes of showers back in May.

The former Maharashtra minister further accused the BMC of focusing on optics rather than genuine relief work. “Let’s hope the BMC answers beyond just putting out photos of visitors to the Disaster Management Room,” he remarked.
