Betul: In a bizarre and distressing turn of events, a poor labourer from Betul district in Madhya Pradesh has been slapped with an outrageous income tax demand of Rs 314 crore, 79 lakh, 87 thousand, and 883. The notice was issued to Chandrashekhar Pandit Rao Kohad, a daily wage worker living in a rented home and struggling to make ends meet with an income of just Rs 200-300 per day.
Chandrashekhar, who is a heart patient and also caring for his ailing wife, was left reeling from the shock of receiving the tax demand. The notice has caused immense mental stress to the entire family, leading to a further deterioration in his health. He is currently undergoing treatment in Nagpur, where his medical expenses have compounded his already dire financial situation.
The issue came to light when the Income Tax Department in Maharashtra sought information from the Betul Multai Municipality regarding land allegedly registered under Chandrashekhar’s name. However, it was later clarified that the land in question does not belong to Chandrashekhar, but is instead registered in the name of a man named Manohar Harakchand, a resident of Devthan in Amla.
Municipal authorities have confirmed that no land is registered under Chandrashekhar’s name, and this clarification has been sent to the income tax department. It was also revealed that Chandrashekhar had opened a bank account in Nagpur four years ago to deposit small savings from his daily earnings. While a bank agent had taken his mobile number at the time, it was never linked to the account, and Chandrashekhar had no knowledge of any suspicious activities related to the account.
The notice, which is based on transactions worth Rs 3 crore, has raised suspicions of possible fraudulent activities or misuse of Chandrashekhar’s personal details. In response, the worried labourer is now taking steps to clear his name. He is planning to consult legal experts and file a case to have the matter thoroughly investigated, demanding answers on how such a massive tax liability could be attributed to someone with no involvement in high-value financial transactions.
