Amidst an unexpected turn of events, Amritpal Singh, the incarcerated head of the “Waris Punjab De” group, has reportedly decided to throw his hat into the political arena by contesting the Lok Sabha election from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib constituency. The genesis of his arrest dates back to February 23, when Amritpal and his affiliated individuals from the ‘Waris Punjab De’ group orchestrated an attack on the Ajnala police station. Armed with swords, sticks, and rods, Amritpal and his supporters engaged in an eight-hour standoff, demanding the release of his ally, Lavpreet Toofan.
Sources indicate that Amritpal is poised to file his nominations between May 7 to May 17, marking the formal initiation of his electoral campaign. The voting in Punjab is scheduled for June 1, 2024, encompassing all 13 constituencies in the state.
In this electoral fray, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has put forth Laljit Singh Bhullar as its candidate from the Khadoor Sahib seat, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Manjeet Singh Manna Mianwind. However, if all unfolds as anticipated, Amritpal Singh will emerge as an independent contender, injecting a unique dimension into Punjab’s electoral landscape.
