Tragedy Strikes During Landing at Jorhat
A tragic accident at an Indian Air Force facility in Assam claimed the lives of five Air Force personnel on Saturday after an AN-32 transport aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Jorhat Air Force Station.
The military aircraft reportedly met with the accident inside the airbase premises, triggering an emergency response from rescue and firefighting teams stationed at the facility.
Co-Pilot Survives, Undergoing Treatment
While five personnel succumbed to their injuries, the aircraft’s co-pilot survived the crash and is currently receiving medical treatment. Officials have not yet released further details regarding his condition.
The loss of lives has sent shockwaves through the defence community, with senior Air Force officials closely monitoring the situation.
Aircraft Caught Fire After Mishap
Initial reports indicate that the AN-32 caught fire shortly after the landing accident. Thick smoke and flames were seen emerging from parts of the aircraft as emergency crews rushed to contain the blaze.
Firefighting units responded immediately and worked to prevent the flames from spreading across the crash site.
Air Force Launches Investigation
Confirming the incident, the Indian Air Force stated that a formal Court of Inquiry has been ordered to establish the circumstances that led to the accident.
An Air Force official said that investigators would examine all technical and operational aspects before determining the cause of the crash.
Senior Officials Reach Accident Site
Following the mishap, senior defence officials were dispatched to the airbase to oversee rescue operations and assess the situation on the ground.
Authorities are expected to analyse flight data, aircraft condition and operational records as part of the investigation.
Questions Over Cause of Crash
The exact reason behind the accident remains unclear. Officials have not ruled out any possibilities and have said that conclusions will be drawn only after a detailed inquiry.
The AN-32 is one of the Indian Air Force’s key transport aircraft and has been widely used for logistics, troop movement and supply missions, particularly in challenging terrains and remote regions.
