In a significant shift from his recent hard-hitting remarks, senior Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee on Saturday adopted a more conciliatory tone toward party colleague Abhishek Banerjee, signalling an attempt to cool speculation about internal divisions within the ruling party.
The statement comes days after political circles were abuzz with reports of friction within the Trinamool Congress leadership, sparking discussions about the party’s internal dynamics ahead of crucial political battles.
“Abhishek Is Like My Son”
Seeking to downplay the perception of a widening rift, Kalyan Banerjee used a family analogy while speaking about the party’s national general secretary.
“He is like my son. It is the duty of a father to forgive every mistake made by a son,” Banerjee said, indicating that personal differences should not overshadow larger political objectives.
His remarks are being viewed as an effort to restore unity at a time when the party is facing mounting political pressure from multiple fronts.
“Democracy Is Under Threat”
While addressing party-related issues, Banerjee also launched a sharp attack on the political climate in the country, alleging that democratic institutions were facing increasing challenges.
“Democracy is under threat. The situation unfolding today is dangerous for democratic values,” he said, while accusing political opponents of attempting to weaken dissenting voices.
The veteran MP argued that opposition leaders in West Bengal were being subjected to unprecedented pressure and scrutiny.
Warning for Dissident Voices
Commenting on reports that some leaders may seek alternative political alignments, Banerjee dismissed such possibilities and questioned the motives behind those contemplating a different path.
“People are free to take their own decisions, but political survival cannot be built solely on convenience,” he remarked.
He also suggested that electoral and constituency-related arguments were being used as excuses by some leaders to justify their political choices.
“TMC Is Not Merging With Congress”
Addressing speculation surrounding opposition realignments, Banerjee firmly rejected suggestions that the Trinamool Congress was considering a merger with the Congress.
“There is no question of the Trinamool Congress merging with the Congress,” he said, seeking to end rumours surrounding the party’s future strategy.
Remarks Come Amid Political Heat
Banerjee’s comments arrived against the backdrop of heightened political activity in West Bengal, including investigations, searches and fresh exchanges between rival political camps.
Recent developments involving senior leaders have intensified political debates across the state, with both the ruling party and opposition accusing each other of pursuing vendetta politics.
Message of Unity
Despite the political turbulence, Banerjee’s latest remarks appeared aimed at projecting unity within the Trinamool Congress.
By choosing the phrase “A father forgives a son,” the veteran MP signalled that differences within the party should not be mistaken for a breakdown in relationships, even as Bengal’s political landscape continues to witness dramatic developments.
