Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Saturday openly spoke about his close personal bond with Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing an Indian community programme in Kuala Lumpur. Calling the relationship special, Anwar Ibrahim said he feels privileged to share a strong friendship with the Indian Prime Minister.
Speaking before a large gathering of the Indian diaspora, the Malaysian Prime Minister said he has closely followed PM Modi’s political journey and leadership path. “Prime Minister Modi ji, I have seen your long struggle and leadership. I truly feel fortunate to call you a great personal friend from India,” Anwar Ibrahim said, drawing applause from the audience.
He further expressed happiness over PM Modi’s visit, describing it as emotionally meaningful for Malaysia. “I am personally excited and deeply thankful that my friend from India is here with us today. This gathering reflects something much deeper than diplomacy — it reflects trust, history, and shared values,” he added.
Highlighting the ancient connections between India and Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim said ties between the two regions existed long before modern borders and governments. He spoke about early maritime trade, cultural exchanges, and historical journeys across the Indian Ocean. Referring to India’s ancient maritime traditions, he mentioned how traders, scholars, and sailors helped build lasting links between the Indian subcontinent and the Malay world.
Addressing PM Modi directly, the Malaysian leader assured him that the Indian community has always played a key role in Malaysia’s national journey. “When Malaysia began building itself as a diverse and united nation, the Indian community stood firmly as our partners. They have contributed immensely to our progress,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the Indian diaspora at the event and described them as a strong emotional and cultural link between the two countries. Calling them a “living bridge,” PM Modi said Indian-origin families in Malaysia have helped connect traditions, food, language, and values across borders.
“There is so much that naturally connects Indian and Malaysian hearts. From Roti Canai and Malabar Parotta to coconut, spices, and Teh Tarik, these shared traditions reflect our deep-rooted bond,” PM Modi said.
