New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday hit out at Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for his demand to include the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in the selection process of Election Commissioners. Sarma called the demand “ironic,” accusing the Congress of lacking transparency when it was in power.
“During Congress rule, appointments were made solely by the ruling government without any transparency. If the Congress truly believed in democratic integrity, why didn’t they implement these reforms in their decades of power?” Sarma questioned. He further accused Gandhi of political posturing, stating, “This hypocrisy highlights their double standards—preaching transparency now after years of opaque governance. The people of India can no longer be misled by such double standards. Practice what you preach before demanding trust.”
The Assam CM’s sharp remarks came shortly after Rahul Gandhi raised concerns over alleged voter roll irregularities in Maharashtra during the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address in the Lok Sabha. Gandhi alleged a suspicious surge in voter registrations between the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections and criticized recent changes in the Election Commissioner selection process.
The Congress leader particularly took issue with the removal of the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee. “Now it’s just the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and me. Two to one. What’s the purpose of me attending the meeting?” he said, suggesting the new system lacks fairness.
The BJP, including Sarma, has dismissed these concerns as an attempt by Congress to “raise unnecessary doubts” over the electoral process. With elections approaching, the debate over electoral transparency and selection procedures continues to heat up, reflecting the deepening political divide between the ruling party and the opposition.
