Mumbai: Mumbaikars woke up to a drenched Thursday as heavy overnight showers continued to pound the city, triggering mild disruptions in road and rail movement while prompting a yellow alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The city is expected to witness continued rainfall through the week.

From the southern tip at Nariman Point to the eastern stretches of Kurla, and from Byculla to Lalbaug, intense morning showers left behind patches of water accumulation and slowed traffic, though large-scale flooding has so far been avoided.

According to early reports, suburban train services—the city’s vital lifeline—saw minor delays of around 10 to 15 minutes on the Central and Harbour lines, while Western Railway operations remained unaffected. Rail commuters have been advised to check live updates via platforms such as m-Indicator before setting out.

Road traffic, too, felt the impact. A truck and tempo collision on JVLR’s Milind Nagar stretch (MIDC) led to a bottleneck in the southbound lane, prompting the Mumbai Traffic Police to issue a diversion advisory. Alternative routes were suggested to ease congestion in the affected corridor.

Despite the intermittent bursts of rain, the maximum daytime temperature is expected to hover near 31°C, bringing relative relief from Mumbai’s typically humid conditions.

One of the more dramatic weather consequences played out at Powai Lake, which began overflowing early Wednesday morning, marking a significant shift from last year when the spillover occurred nearly three weeks later. Officials attributed this to the heavy rainfall in its 6.6 sq km catchment zone. While the scenic lake presents a picturesque sight in monsoon, authorities reminded citizens that its waters are non-potable and reserved for industrial use only.

Meanwhile, rainfall activity intensified across the Konkan belt, with Raigad and Ratnagiri districts placed under orange alert. In light of the worsening conditions, schools in Raigad remained closed on Wednesday as a precautionary measure.

Looking ahead, the IMD forecast paints a wet picture for Mumbai and adjoining regions. Thursday is expected to witness moderate to heavy rain, while June 20 may bring some relief with slightly lower intensity. On June 21 and 22, showers are likely to continue intermittently. The wet spell is projected to extend through June 24, with temperatures fluctuating between 25°C and 32°C.
