Mumbai: Twelve-year-old shuttler Hazel Joshi emerged as the star performer of the opening day, securing places in three semi-finals at the ACE Realty-Yonex Sunrise Maharashtra State Sub-Junior (U-11 & U-13) Selection Badminton Tournament 2026, being played at the Priyadarshini Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in Mulund on Sunday.
The tournament is being organised by the Maharashtra Badminton Association in association with Rudrani Badminton Academy, and is jointly conducted by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and Brihanmumbai Krida Ani Lalit Kala Pratisthan (BKLP).
Second-seeded Hazel, who trains at the Rudrani Badminton Academy, began her impressive campaign with a commanding 21-8, 21-10 victory over Aradhya Mohite in the Girls’ Under-13 singles quarter-finals.
She then partnered top seed Divisha Singh to register a convincing 21-14, 21-3 win over Mahi Rasal and Tavasmi Mohta in the Girls’ Under-13 doubles quarter-finals.
Hazel completed a memorable day by teaming up with Aadiraj Shetty to defeat Shriya Kulkarni and Ishan Roy 21-10, 21-17 in the Mixed Under-13 doubles quarter-finals, ensuring her place in three semi-finals.
Meanwhile, one of the biggest surprises of the tournament came in the Boys’ Under-13 singles, where unseeded Mcdonald Colaco stunned top seed Aadiraj Shetty with a 21-18, 21-17 victory to advance to the semi-finals.
