Handwara Police holds Drug De-addiction awareness Camp at Govt Degree College

Handwara Police in collaboration with Youth Development & Rehabilitation Centre (YD&RC) Srinagar held a day-long awareness programme on Drug De-addiction at Government Degree College (GDC) in Handwara on Thursday.

The event was inaugurated by Superintendent of Police Handwara Sandeep Gupta (IPS) who highlighted the main aim of organising this event, the role of every single person in eradicating the menace of drugs from the society. 

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Handwara gave an elaborate presentation about the menace of drugs, it’s sources, causes, consequences, role of parents, civil society, teachers, police, Excise, Revenue, Health Department, Judiciary and other stakeholders.

While speaking at the event, ASP Handwara said that the issue of drug abuse is a challenge for the country. It is the duty of all stakeholders to join in creating awareness about the illegal use of drugs and the measures to be taken to prevent this menace. He said that substance abuse has affected human rights in every aspect. 

He appreciated participants for being part of the event organised by Handwara Police to get aware about the ill effects of drugs and cooperating Handwara Police in organising the programme on drug De-addiction which he said, will prove to be useful in the long run.

He also said that to eradicate the menace of drugs from the society, public cooperation is necessary and stressed upon the participants to share all such information related to drug supply in the area so that police can act swiftly.  He also appealed to the participants to cooperate with the Police in identifying drug addicts in their locality so that they can be counselled in better ways.

Members of Youth Development & Rehabilitation Centre also spoke on the occasion and highlighted their experience in treating drug addicts. They gave a detailed speech on how to recognize that a person is addicted to drugs, treatment and testing process.

During the event, the members of civil society, religious preachers, teachers and students also spoke and highlighted the causes and consequences of drug abuse and assured their possible support and cooperation for a peaceful environment. At the end of the program the prizes were distributed among the participants as a token of respect and peace.

Chairman Municipal Committee Handwara, ASP Handwara, Principal Government Degree College Handwara, Deputy Superintendent of Police DAR Handwara, Dr. Muzafar Khan of YD&RC Tehsildar Handwara, teaching and non-teaching staff of GDC Handwara, Doctors from Government District Hospital Handwara, Students from GDC Handwara and various other Schools, members of Civil Society were also present on the event.
