“Govt Hiding Behind Myths to Avoid Debate on Election Commission,” Says Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi

New Delhi: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday strongly criticized the central government for what he called a deliberate attempt to avoid a parliamentary debate on the functioning and transparency of the Election Commission (EC). He alleged that the government was trying to escape public scrutiny by using “myths, lies, and propaganda” and that its refusal to allow a debate showed clear signs of fear.

Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex, Gogoi said, “In recent weeks, several ministers have argued that there is no ministry responsible for handling issues related to the Election Commission or the electoral process. They have even claimed that Parliament has never discussed such matters. But this is simply not true. We have the records to prove it.”

Gogoi cited specific examples from parliamentary history to counter the government’s claim. “In 1981, there was a short-duration discussion in the Lok Sabha regarding delays in conducting by-elections. In 1995, Parliament discussed the postponement of elections in Bihar. And in 2005, there was a clear and recorded debate on electoral reforms and the election process,” he stated.

“These examples clearly show that Parliament has not only discussed but actively debated matters related to the Election Commission and electoral reforms. This government, however, is trying to suppress any conversation around the conduct of elections. What are they trying to hide?” Gogoi asked.

The Congress leader accused the ruling BJP government of avoiding transparency and accountability in electoral matters. He said the refusal to permit discussion was a “conscious political move” designed to shield the Election Commission from tough questions, especially in light of recent controversies.

Gogoi’s comments come amid ongoing protests in Parliament by parties in the INDIA bloc. On Thursday, opposition MPs once again raised slogans and staged demonstrations in the House, particularly criticizing the Election Commission’s voter list revision exercise in Bihar. The opposition claims that the EC’s drive is being done without enough transparency and could lead to voter suppression or manipulation.

“Why is the government afraid to allow a debate?” Gogoi asked. “Democracy works best when institutions are questioned and held to account. If the Election Commission is doing everything right, why fear a public discussion in Parliament?”

He added that instead of engaging with the opposition’s concerns, the government is relying on “technical excuses” and “procedural tricks” to avoid addressing serious questions about India’s democratic processes.

“The government says the EC is an independent institution and cannot be discussed in Parliament. But history shows otherwise. These debates have happened before. We are only asking for the same opportunity — to discuss, question, and improve,” Gogoi said.
