New Delhi: Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Friday hit back at Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, accusing him of making baseless comments about the ongoing Maha Kumbh and its water quality. Shekhawat asserted that opposition leaders have a history of undermining national events that bring pride to India.

“In the last 10 years, any event that has made India proud has been criticized irresponsibly by the opposition. Today, over 60 crore people have taken a holy dip at the Kumbh, making it a global attraction. Instead of appreciating it, Akhilesh Yadav is questioning the water quality without understanding international standards for bathing, river, and potable water,” Shekhawat told reporters.

His remarks come after Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath dismissed concerns over faecal contamination in the Triveni Sangam waters. However, Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the BJP government is hiding pollution data and suppressing reports about Ganga water quality.

The SP chief cited a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report presented to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which found that during tests conducted on January 12-13, 2025, the river water did not meet bathing standards at most locations.

Yadav took to X, stating, “The CPCB told the NGT that the Ganga in Prayagraj is contaminated with sewage, yet in the UP Assembly, this report was dismissed as false.”

With the Maha Kumbh drawing global attention, the political tussle over river pollution and water quality continues to escalate, fueling fresh controversy between the BJP and SP ahead of upcoming elections.
