Washington: In a major breakthrough for Indian investigative agencies, Nehal Modi, the younger brother of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, was arrested in the United States on Saturday. The arrest was made following a formal extradition request by Indian authorities in connection with the ₹13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam.
Nehal Modi’s arrest marks a critical step in India’s pursuit of justice in one of the country’s largest banking frauds. According to US prosecutors, Nehal is facing extradition proceedings based on two serious charges: money laundering under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, and criminal conspiracy under Sections 120-B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code.
Nehal is accused of playing an active role in helping Nirav Modi conceal proceeds of the crime and tamper with crucial evidence. Indian authorities allege that he was instrumental in coordinating the destruction of key documents and digital records, and also influenced employees to prevent investigators from tracing the money trail.
