As the Lok Sabha elections for 2024 approach, scheduled to commence from April 18 and unfold across seven phases, it’s imperative for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to understand the process of exercising their voting rights. The Centre has issued a notification calling upon all NRI voters to participate in this democratic exercise, with the counting of votes slated for June 4.
Here’s a comprehensive guide on how NRIs can cast their votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections:
Step 1: Visit the Voters’ Service Portal and navigate to the “Forms” section.
Step 2: Look for the option “New registration for overseas (NRI) electors” and proceed to click on “Fill Form 6A.”
Step 3: Fill out Form 6A online with precise and accurate information. Ensure to upload self-attested photocopies of essential documents including your passport, address in India, valid visa endorsement, and a recent passport-sized color photograph.
Step 4: After completing the form, choose your preferred method of submission, either in person or by mail.
Step 5: If opting for mail submission, include self-attested photocopies of all required documents along with the form.
Step 6: For in-person submission, visit your constituency’s Electoral Registration Officer or Assistant ERO and present your original passport for verification.
It’s imperative to ensure that all documents are correctly filled out and submitted to complete the registration process as an NRI voter.
Following the registration process, booth-level officials will conduct verification checks at the addresses provided in citizens’ passports. Should there be any discrepancies, voters can utilize Form 8 to rectify errors in the electoral roll. Come election day, NRIs can exercise their voting rights by presenting their original passports at the designated polling station.
The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) will communicate their decision via post to the registered address and through SMS to the phone number provided in Form 6A. It’s crucial to note that NRIs will not receive an Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) and must physically cast their votes at the assigned polling station while carrying their original passport for verification.
With these steps outlined, NRIs can actively engage in the democratic process, ensuring their voices are heard in shaping the future of the nation.
